Construction of the new three (3) kilometre pipeline from the main line to Mpika Depot

The construction of the new three-kilometer pipeline from the main line to the Mpika Depot marks a significant development for the Tazama Pipelines network. This project is designed to improve the efficiency and capacity of fuel transportation to the Mpika Depot, a critical hub in the regional fuel supply chain. By extending the existing infrastructure, the pipeline will not only streamline fuel flow but also reduce potential bottlenecks, ensuring a more reliable and uninterrupted supply of fuel. This upgrade strengthens the overall resilience of the Tazama Pipelines, supporting the energy needs of the region and enhancing the strategic importance of the Mpika Depot in the national fuel distribution system.

Main Engine Replacement

The pumping units used to pump petroleum products to Zambia were the same ones installed at the company’s inception in 1968.However; they were too old to continue providing a reliable service because the status of the engines had deteriorated thereby becoming a cost to repair because their spares had become very difficult to source.

In view of this, TAZAMA management embarked on an exercise to replace all the 28 units i.e. four (4) per station. This project was phased to tackle one station at a time, in view of the high costs involved of approximately US$5.5 million per station. Consequently, TAZAMA Pipelines Limited spent 37 million US dollars to replace old pumps at seven stations along the pipeline, which runs from Dar-es-Salaam to Ndola.

Pipeline Pigging

TAZAMA has been carrying out routine maintenance of the pigging stations. A pigging station is a facility that is used as a cleaning station for maintaining the content the pipeline using a Pig. In view of this, TAZAMA has been carrying out phased pipeline repairs in order to enhance the integrity of the pipeline as well as improve the capacity.

Intelligent Pipeline Pigging

TAZAMA uses intelligent pigging to detect any damage to the pipeline and this exercise costs TAZAMA over 2 million U.S dollar every five years. The intelligent pigging exercise was last carried out in 2013 in order to establish the extent of corrosion in the pipeline which led to the definition of scope of works required to be performed on the pipeline to enhance reliability and reduce losses due to leaks. Based on the intelligent pigging results all weak areas which had metal losses above 60% were sleeved and replaced. These repair works  greatly reduced losses due to leakages and improved our pumping rate from 100m³/hr to 115m³/hr i.e. 800,000 MT per year.

Storage Hospitality

The Storage Hospitality initiative includes key fuel depots across various regions to enhance the nation’s fuel storage infrastructure. This includes the Ndola Fuel Terminal, Lusaka Fuel Depot, Solwezi Fuel Depot, and Mpika Fuel Depot, which together ensure a reliable supply of fuel across different areas, improving logistics and distribution efficiency.
