In demonstrating TAZAMAs’ vision of ensuring that petroleum products are delivered effectively and efficiently using modern innovative technology; the TAZAMA management believes innovation and technology can drive great achievements as evidenced by the introduction of a Drag Reduction Agent (DRA) to improve pipeline efficiency. This is in line with the company’s mission of ensuring timely availability and affordable fuel in Zambia and the Sub-Region.
The DRA reduces friction and increases fluid flow by reducing turbulence within the pipeline, thus acting as a lubricant for the fluid, enabling for more efficient transportation of refined liquids such as diesel. As evidenced in its infancy, the DRA implementation has improved operations tremendously by boosting daily fuel transportation capacity; with diesel transportation via the pipeline increasing from 2.6 million – 2.8 million litres per day to over 3.5 million – 3.6 million per day. The company is now positioned to match or even exceed the pipeline’s original design capacity of 1.1 million metric tons annually and the current annual throughput of about 800,000 metric tons respectively.
Eng. Felchesmi Mramba, Tanzania’s Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Energy, underlined this milestone at the DRA’s recent official launch in Dar es Salaam. The occasion was attended by Zambia’s Minister for Energy, Mr. Makozo Chikote, Zambia’s Permanent Secretary in theMinistry of Energy and the TAZAMA Board Chairman, Mr. Peter Mumba, TAZAMA’s Managing Director, Eng. Davison Thawethe, and other Tanzanian and Zambian authorities. At the event, Eng. Mramba stated that this technology will significantly improve fuel transportation, enabling for a greater amount to be transferred in less time.
TAZAMA Pipeline Ltd Managing Director Davison Thawethe said the DRA is a “game changer” in the petroleum industry. He further said the DRA will not only increase the diesel flow rate but equally the revenue for the company.
